On 24th January, 1917, 16th Rifle Brigade of 117 Brigade, 39th Division left their billets in the Ypres prison and moved into the front line in the Wieltje sector of the salient. They were relieved during the night of 30th-31st January at which time Herbert Bagshaw was killed. The Battalion diary has no record of this but it is likely that he was killed by shell fire which was ever present in the Ypres salient and the Germans would invariably target battalion reliefs when they were at their most vulnerable. |
